Campaigns

Worthing Downlanders are primarily a campaigning group, interested in maintaining and improving our Downlands. That invariably means that public access is a prime concern, and in fact the group was formed out of the successful 'Stop the Cissbury Sell Off' campaign.

More in depth details regarding the original campaign can be found at www.scso.co.uk

However the issue is not yet settled, and statutory public access is still being denied to the people who own the land - and that's us !

15th October 2010

A full response to the outcome will be released shortly, but here is our initial view:

Worthing Downlanders are hopeful of a major increase in public access to downland near Worthing.

A delegation from Worthing Downlanders met officers representing the partnership which has drafted proposals for the future of the council-owned downland south of Cissbury Ring to discuss their concerns last Friday, October 15th. This downland, at Tenants Hill and Mount Carvey, had been put up for sale a year ago and then withdrawn in response to a large public campaign. The partnership consists of Worthing Borough Council (WBC), Natural England, the National Trust and the South Downs Joint Committee.

The partnership's draft had offered only a small increase in the amount of public access currently existing on the land, but the Downlanders say the talks have left them feeling more hopeful.

Also present were representatives from: Worthing Borough Council, Natural England, South Downs Joint Committee, and The National Trust.
